Architectural Trends in 2021
Same as 2020, 2021 will focus on new and emerging technologies, sustainable architectural elements, and carbon footprint maintenance. Lately, architecture has been heavily influenced by social trends. So recycled materials use, alternative energy sources, and environmental concerns will be the trends moving forward. These are some of the trends based on our prediction:
Industrial Style
The industrial style uses asymmetrical shapes that combine sharp lines and materials such as iron, wood, and aluminum. It heavily uses recycled plastic, which helps reduce development costs. This style is inherently simple without any surface elements, and mostly used in residential buildings.
Its features include:

- Flat roof
- External architectural elements such as balcony, terrace, garage
- Rough material
New-age Smart Home
The smart home concept is trending and taking over almost all aspects of modern life, and housing is no exception. The smart home is growingly popular among property agents. Today, you can find homes with automatic temperature, light, or home safety control systems.
Curves
Curve is a signature style of traditional architecture. Thanks to architects and designers incorporating arched doors, round windows, and curved mirrors into their interior design projects, curve is now a trend. In line with the Chubby and Biophilic Design trends, using curves is an ingenious new way to add more organic shapes to our homes, not only through actual curves, but also through decorative patterns on the walls.
Carbon Footprint Conscious-based Design
Over the past few years, architects and consumers have become increasingly aware of the environment and have actively encouraged applying natural designs. In 2020-2021, environmentally friendly concepts became a staple in architecture, which also reduces operational and maintenance costs since this concept basically focuses on efficency across three aspects of energy, water, and materials. A building design that ensures such efficiency will naturally incur less operational costs than conventional buildings.
In a report by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on the impact of environmentally friendly buildings in Jakarta and Bandung as of June 2019, this building concept has saved energy costs in the amount of US$120 million. With the reduced building operational and maintenance costs, buildings that adopt the green building concept will incur lower costs than other buildings in the long term, even though the initial construction cost for a green building is relatively higher. Finally, in terms of investment, a property that applies this environmentally friendly principle will also have a higher selling value.
Open and Fluid Living Area
Living rooms are getting more open and fluid, promoting more flow and less formal space separation. Ideas like using curtains and moving partitions in an open space have been growing in popularity as a solution to hide certain areas.
The Appeal of Outdoor Spaces
In 2021, architects tried to provide the most comfortable outdoor experience, which resulted in elements such as verandas, balconies, and terraces. Today, outdoor design has the same weight as as the interior. It is also necessary that these outdoor spaces function throughout the year. Many use carefully designed panoramic and partial glazing, state-of-the-art sun protection, and air conditioning, as well as highlight climate resistant materials.
